2. Classic Collaborations
The music industry was the primary muse for collaborations this year. From Chanel’s whimsical musical short film ‘Reincarnation‘ featuring Pharrell Williams and Cara Delevingne to Puma’s fashion forward collaboration with Rihanna as the creative head for Puma womenswear, we can hardly wait for what’s in store next year.
3. Designer Demise and Departure
The death of the ‘Sultan of Suave’ Oscar de la Renta (on elle‘s cover) shook up the fashion industry, his design sensibility and ingenuity were unmatched and will be etched in our minds forever. This year also marked the exit of designers. In September, Jean Paul Gaultier announced his retirement from ready-to-wear; and in December, Kering announced that Frida Giannini would depart Gucci after 10 years at the label come February 2015. Satya Paul also announced this year, the end of their contract with Masaba Gupta.
4. Tech Treasures
As far as trends go, this was the year wearable tech made its mark. Apple, Samsung and Intel all unveiled their wrist-bound smart-band. Google finally revealed its Google Glass.
With technology taking centre stage in the fashion world, brands like Ralph Lauren and Tory Burch joined the bandwagon with their wearable tech gadgets. The Polo Tech shirt, which was made with the help of Canadian tech firm Omsignal, has built-in sensors that track the wearer’s heart rate and movement whereas Tory Burch teamed up with Fitbit to create a super chic tech accessory that tracks steps, distance and calories burned and shows you how you’re stacking up against your daily goals. 5. A Gentleman’s Affair
This year marked the boom of Menswear. With the core focus being on reinventing men’s fashion and lifestyle, the fashion industry saw Pharrell Williams taking the centre stage by being on Google’s most searched red carpet list. His collaboration with Chanel No.5, short suit at the Oscars and his oversize Vivienne Westwood hat look are noteworthy. In India, celebrities like Hrithik Roshan and Arjun Kapoor have taken the fashion fraternity by storm with their dapper to grunge look on an off the red carpet.
6. Couture Culture
