The stage was set for high drama and high fashion on Day 2 of India Couture Week as master couturier and avant garde specialist Gaurav Gupta debuted his Couture 2015 collection, titled ‘Silt & Cipher’. A reflection on the fleeting moments of enlightenment and the fleeting nature of our lives, the surrealistic runway and the haunting soundtrack set the mood for magic and romance, an ephemeral ambiance to compliment the concept of the collection, ‘An Enchanted Forest’.
The collection itself was nothing short of dramatic, with cleaner silhouettes [than previous collections] but still temperamental designs, the abstract construction, amorphous shapes and fluid lines that speak Gaurav Gupta to us. The cinched waist, recurring peplum, many tiered skirts and costumesque volume made their appearances as did the designer’s favorite bordeaux, indigo and tonal pastels color palette. What made us sit and take notice though were the newer silhouettes and embroideries, the cascading oil blue skirted jacket with bugle beading cut a striking picture as did the silver fern Zari Sari Gown with a lust worthy floor length jacket.
There was an extensive play of tone on tone and intricate yet edgy embroidery that bound the collection together: an almost botanical renderings of roots and oceans to make the gowns, sari gowns and lehenga gowns seem emerging out of elements. The silver fern zari, zardozi and cascading lace work was offset by striking bugle bead embroidery and other worldly hair and makeup of the models, ethereal angels walking down the ramp in a modern day enchanted forest.
And of course no Gaurav Gupta show can be complete without his muse, Kalki Koechlin. The actor looked especially angelic in a champagne autumn cascading organza gown as she walked won the ramp, smiling ever so beatifically. All in all the collection was definitely one we are not going to forget in a hurry!
