JJ Valaya showcased his bridal couture’15 collection, titled, “Bolshoi Bazaar‘, on Day 3 of BMW India Bridal Fashion Week. The collection was a confluence of Indian design with Russian architecture, an ode to the modern day bride in search of the exotic and the adventurous. JJ Valaya derived his inspiration from Russia’s high life: jewels of the Czars, the Ikats of the nomadic Russia, the Onion domes of Moscow and Russian architecture.
Bolshoi, the Russian term for ‘big’, was indeed the predominant element at the collection preview, with a larger than life set depicting the Moscow architecture and the collection showcased sculptural, draped silhouettes with elaborate fantasy elements like the ornate Swarovski head dresses. The collection included embellished Saris, Kurtis, Lehengas, Jewelled Capes for Womenswear and Suits, Sherwanis and cloaks for menswear in an striking colour palette of whites, ivory, reds, oranges and blues with hints of brown, golds and pinks. Faux fur details on sarees and lehengas with prints inspired from Russian architecture lend an exotic touch to intricately embroidered designs.
The accessories played an important role in bringing the whole ‘Russian-Indian’ collection together. Russian faux fur Ushanka hats and elaborate Kokoshnik inspired headgear with filigree work with pearl accents designed by Valliyan which served a strong role on the runway.
