5 Alternative Fashion Collections To Watch Out For At Lakme Fashion Week
It is that time of the year again when we talk fashion shop, going over the fashion forecasts, deconstructing the fashion week collections and coming up with a style reckoner for the new season. As we gear up for the AW’15 edition of Lakme Fashion Week that commenced yesterday with a stellar opening show by design veterans Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla, we did a bit of research on what to expect from the AW collections to be showcased; the trends, the designs and the style sensibilities.
An overriding trend this season seems to be non-conformity to the trend forecasts, with emphasis on the sense of the self and the expression of the individualistic style resonating with designers’ personal inspirations. Here we round up five labels that present an alternative take on AW fashion, a sneak peek into the fashion anarchy to be expected at Lakme Fashion Week and the collections that we are especially intrigued about:
Elegant | Deconstructed | Ilk

Enigmatically titled, “Error Code 508: Loop Detected”, contemporary label Ilk’s AW’15 collection compels the viewer to look closer. What intrigues us is the juxtaposition of the metaphysical with the Daedalus working of the craftsman. Tangled threads, never ending patterns and form repetition to procure your mind in an infinite loop of madness. Delude winter with a collection of opaque and transparent fabrics ornamented with illusionary motifs inspired from nature and geometry alike.
Primitive | Animistic | Armaan Aiman

A collection of oxymorons and unusual juxtapositions, Eclipse by Armaan Aiman is a visual documentation of the raw mystique of the primitive legends presented through a modern day minimalistic lens. A sartorial saga presented through the convergence of the hard and the soft through edgy constructions and soft drapes, the animalistic and the minimalistic of the age old motifs and the contemporary silhouettes, this is a collection for the romantics and the adventurists and those who like their fashion with a background story.
Nonchalant | Reconstructed | munkee.see.munkee.doo

Drawing inspiration from its own earlier collections, eclectic label munkee.see.munkee.doo will present a collection that references back to the essence of the cut – the fabrics, movement, shapes and proportions. Wardrobe basics have been re-interpreted and elevated with carefully deconstructed construction – inside-out dart accents implying design nonchalance , seams that have been left hanging to resemble drapes, grosgrain tapes used as plackets and applique work resembling age old patina of peeling walls. What is especially interesting is the fabric maneuvering, acrylic wool made to resemble hand knits and layered lightweight cottons for a winter appropriate wardrobe.
Controlled | Minimalist | Huemn

A puritan design collection by a label that excels in minimalistic construction, the Huemn Fall Winter 15 collection is a lesson in the uncluttered and the relevant. Marrying ‘boy meets girl’ androgyny of oversized silhouettes with delicate, earthy colour palettes and organic tribal motifs for subtly nuanced designs, this is a collection of ideas that trickle down the thought factory, adjusted to wearable details and fit, fall and finish for exclusive, comfortable and individualistic looks.
Graphic | Disruptive | Dhruv Kapoor

With ‘Anarchy’ as its title, Dhruv Kapoor’s AW’15 collection is tantalising with its promise of rebellion and a new fashion world order, as the designer puts it. A rebellion against the sequential societal norms and a new world order of ‘I’ over the ‘We’ – fashion that is extension of the self, underlined by individual moods, not pandering to the trends. An oddly seductive, powerful and at the same time, fragile amalgamation of utilitarian military styled silhouettes, bold colour palettes and delicate bejewelled detailing, this is a collection that hints at the sartorial emancipation of the modern woman.
