AW Wardrobe Essentials | Four Ways To Wear The Cape
If there has been one trend that has taken the international and Indian runways by storm, it has to be the ever versatile cape. Be it the Michael Kors AW collection at New York Fashion Week earlier this year with a variety of capes as statement pieces, the monogrammed Burberry blanket affair we have been seeing on celebrities of late or the new found obsession of Indian designers to pair the said outer wear with Indian silhouettes – this has been the year of the cape in many ways fashion wise.
From summer to fall to winter and from casual to evening wear, you’ll be surprised at how versatile the cape can be in your daily mix. Capes are definitely a must have wardrobe staple in our opinion for accentuating any outfit and adding a statement factor to our style. You may not be a caped crusader, but pulling off this outerwear essential is surprisingly easy. Here we show you how to wear capes in four different ways for those sartorially forward fashion statement this season. From ethnic to minimalist and from sporty to oriental, keep reading for our shoppable style edits for this hot trend:
Avant Garde Traditionalist
Yes we get that Sari gowns are a great way to mix your love for the traditional with the modern for those glamorous evening affairs. You would however be surprised how quickly this look can be elevated to another level altogether by pairing the sari gown with a delicately embroidered cape – much like the below featured Malini Ramani look from Amazon India Fashion Week earlier this year. Add an eclectic statement clutch, like the below Karieshma Sarnaa clutch and you will be all set to be the sartorial highlight of the evening!

Layered Sports Luxe
Now this is a look we cannot stop obsessing over – transitioning our favorite sports wear trend for a more upscale look. So while we would wear the below Lovebirds look in a heart beat for a day out with our girlfriends, for that daytime date however we would recommend teaming a slightly racier jumpsuit, like the Deme by Gabriella parrot jumpsuit below with a tribal print cape (the Morrocan print Rajadeep Ranawat affair has us lusting this instant) and a braided jute and gold necklace (just like this En Inde piece) with bed hair for that wildly sensuous look. The fact that you are effectively teaming three of the hottest trends this year – prints on prints, capes and sports luxe – will earn you all the brownie points for your impeccable fashion sense.

We love a touch of exotic to our evening wear for standing apart from the crowd. For the very same reason, we loved this Shruti Sancheti look at the recently concluded Lakme Fashion Week – the fact that the designer beautifully merged Banarasi handlooms with a Japanese canvas made us fall in love with the collection all that more. And don’t get us started on that sheer maple leaf print cape – we are in serious fashion lust! Wear the look as is for a red carpet event or opt for a more toned down version for a daytime winter affair. We recommend an oriental print dress, like the Nida Mahmood bodycon below teamed with an ethereally embroidered sheer cape (like the one from Joy Mitra featured here) and some pop out accessories keeping in tone with the whole look – consider these Marsala emerald studs and floral Aharin clutch. You will be a ray of fashion sunshine, trust us!

Ask us about one of our ever favorite fashion statement and it would have to be a white on white minimalist look like the one by Kavita Bhartia for her FW15 collection (featured below). We cannot stress enough on the sartorial impact of a sharply tailored all white ensemble for that woman of power persona you aim for on most occasions. And whites in winter are all that forceful in our opinion. Channel that edgy power by teaming a laser cut cape that doubles as a top (picture the Urvashi Joneja cape featured below) with a fitted high waisted skirt – we would absolutely recommend the below laser cut Deme by Gabriella asymmetric skirt, and strappy sandals for that work event you want to make an impression at.
