Sophisticated Kitsch A La Manish Arora at Paris Fashion Week SS16
His love affair with Paris began seven years ago. Since then, he’s shown regularly at Paris Fashion Week and even had a stint with luxury French label Paco Rabanne. Today his eponymous premium pret label, Manish Arora Paris has become synonymous with non conformist yet tasteful fashion for the modern eclectics.
Manish Arora is known for his astute craftsmanship and unique play on colors and prints – think trademark neon pinks, popping golds, psychedelic hearts and embroidered paisleys. And Manish Arora Paris pushes the boundary that much farther in terms of Indian heritage inspired designs with an avant garde, surrealistic vibe.
His latest collection, MA Paris SS16 debuted at the ongoing Paris Fashion Week last Thursday amid much speculation and anticipation. The bar was set high with his earlier collection previews at the venue drawing unequivocal critical acclaim by the who’s who of the international fashion circuit. And the designer didn’t disappoint this time around either, in fact surprising the audience yet again with a shift in his aesthetic muse – from sporty, girlish characters clad in psychedelic patterns to a more grown-up, still exuberantly colorful, but definitely more sophisticated woman.
Titled ‘Disco Gypsy’, MA Paris SS16 collection was inspired by the swinging seventies with a touch of eclectic thrown in – think Jerry Hall and Bianca Jagger at Studio 54, mixed and matched with the designer’s signature Indian-ness. While Arora’s craftsmanship was more intricate than ever, with some of the handworked pieces created over a period of one and a half months according to the designer, embellishment was the star focus. Hearts, stars, butterflies, ethnic floral patterns and even little Rubik’s cubes and cassettes popped out with elaborate embroideries.
Veteran model Debra Shaw, who also fronts the label’s latest print campaign, opened the show looking every but Manish Arora’s new muse – a glorious gypsy queen in a multilayered, half tutu-half peasant skirt look and a cropped bolero with shimmery beading and folkloric patterns. Following designs included embellished sweatshirts, ruffled & multi-tiered skirts, billowing kaftan jackets, flared crop tops and ruched pants in luxurious dupions, satins and tulles accentuated with tulip prints, paisley and heart motifs, surreal paint swirls and 3D applique butterflies. While as is the collection was highly editorial and sure to be a hit with the international and Indian celeb set, it was also surprisingly immensely wearable – we are picturing the crop tops and sweatshirts paired with toned down flared denims and the tiered skirts paired with billowing peasant tops for that effortless and summery bohemian chic.
