Suket Dhir just won the International Woolmark Prize for menswear, taking Indian fashion leaps and strides forward on the global map. Rahul Misra had earlier won the prestigious title in the womenswear category in 2014, but this is the first time an Indian designer has won in the men’s category.
We had caught up with Dhir at the AIFW when he was preparing for the final round of the competition at Pitti Uomo in Florence. He spoke about how excited he was to be showing his (now) winning capsule collection that showcases a coalescence of western tailoring and Indian techniques. It mainly features oversized ikat suits and will be available in the world’s leading fashion outlets like Saks Fifth Avenue. He also won a sizeable cash prize of AU$100,000 and we can’t wait to see what he’s going to come up with next!
Congrats Suket! This is definitely not just a giant step for the designer, but for the entire Indian fashion industry!
